20 companies in Dayton listed amongst nation's fastest-growing

According to Inc. magazine’s exclusive ranking of America's fastest-growing private companies, twenty companies in the Dayton region ranked among the 5000 fastest growing.

Out of the twenty companies, two firms have made this year’s Inc. 500 list, whereas the remaining eighteen companies were on the larger Inc. 5000 list. The two companies featuring in the Inc. 500 list are Instant Tax Service of Dayton and Raven Rock Workwear of Dayton.

Instant Tax Service of Dayton grew from US$ 1.5 million in revenue in 2005 to more than US$ 27 million in 2008 and is ranked at No. 93. On the other hand, Raven Rock Workwear of Dayton posted revenue of US$ 6.8 million in 2008, which was up from US$ 865,000 in 2005. This company is ranked at No. 369.

As per this list, the Dayton region has made over 50 % boosts in the number of companies on the entire list this year. There were only 13 companies last year that featured in the Inc. 5000 list.

Ohio dominates the list of nation’s top 10 health systems

Ohio leads the Thomson Reuters ranking of the nation’s top 10 health systems. The rankings feature five Ohio-based health systems, including OhioHealth Corp. of Columbus, the biggest hospital in the region.

Thomson Reuters said that researchers of its analysis ranking looked at all U.S. health systems with two or more short-term, general, non-federal hospitals. The rankings were based on public mortality rates, medical complications, patient safety and length-of-stay data etc.

Ohio gets US$ 14 million as Renewable Energy grants

The Ohio Department of Development's Ohio Energy Office has received US$ 14 million in funding through the “Deploying Renewable Energy: Wind and Solar” grant program.

Now, the State is seeking eligible applicants to provide grants for the installation of qualified solar electric, solar thermal and wind electric technologies. Grants will range between US$ 250,000 and US$1 million and will be selected through a competitive process.

Auto Parts Co. in Ohio installs wind turbine to reduce carbon footprints

Pearl Road Auto Parts and Wrecking has become the first company in Northeast Ohio to install a wind turbine to generate energy. This way, the company plans to run its business on renewable energy and thereby reduce its carbon footprint.

Once the installation work is completed, the turbine will meet the company’s electricity needs.

Ohio based Power Company to burn crops instead of coal to reduce pollution

Ohio Edison Co., a subsidiary of Akron, Ohio-based First Energy Corp., has agreed to repower a coal-fired plant near Shadyside in eastern Ohio under a federal court agreement.

The company will burn tree trimmings, grass, crops and other green material instead of coal to reduce pollution. This plant is estimated to be the largest coal-fired power plant in the country to repower with biofuels.

The task to repower will begin in 2012 with mostly biomass fuels along with no more than 20 % low sulfur coal.

Ohio Third Frontier declares advanced energy opportunities

Ohio budget to boost solar power

The latest budget of Ohio addresses the cost of installation of solar power, which is one of the biggest barriers in the large-scale deployment of renewable energy technology.

With this, Ohio seeks to put solar power in the financial reach of Ohio residents.

The initial cost of installation of solar panels goes up to tens of thousands of dollars and this is mostly not affordable to the vast majority of homeowners. So, to make things better for Ohio residents, the budget approved earlier this month enables cities to use bonds or grants to pay for the installation of solar panels.

Residents who get the money will then pay back the cost, plus the interest, through an assessment on their property taxes for up to 25 years.

Findlay companies receive development grants

The State Controlling Board approved US$ 3.5 million in economic development grants to aid business growth in Ohio administered by the Ohio Department of Development. These grants are expected to create about 195 new jobs and retain 3,200 positions.

Ohio has approved US$ 3 million grant for hybrid-electric vehicle

Ohio State University and Vanner Inc. are together working with industry partners to accelerate the electric vehicle industry in Ohio. Ohio State University’s Center for Automotive Research (CAR) recently secured state approval for the first US$500,000 of a US$3 million Ohio Third Frontier Grant designed to help develop market-viable commercial electric vehicles. These vehicles have a potential growth rate of 17.1% annually and their advancement is expected to create more than 900 new jobs over the next five years.

Investment

JumpStart invests US$ 250,000 in tech materials company

Venture development organization JumpStart Inc. said its JumpStart Ventures unit has invested US$ 250,000 in Portage County Town in Garrettsville based company Catacel Corp. that deals in making catalytic heat exchanging materials.

JumpStart said Catacel's proprietary materials enable the development of reactors for hydrogen production that are lighter, smaller, lower in cost, and more energy efficient than existing technology.

JumpStart’s investment is mainly expected to be used by Catacel to pursue customers in the hydrogen industry and to perform market analysis for future sales efforts.

Barbasol to start plant in Ashland

Barbasol, the Dublin, Ohio based beard-busting shaving cream is investing US$ 7.25 million to buy land and build a plant in an Ashland-owned industrial park.

Ohio State offered over US$1.1 million incentives to the company including tax breaks, discounted land and a railroad spur to get the deal.

Barbasol plans to open a 78,000-square-foot plant by April next year, employing over 30 people within three years and up to 75 more by 2016.

Five Northeast Ohio companies honored

Five Northeast Ohio companies were honored in Columbus on 26th August at the 2009 Governor's Excellence in Exporting Awards ceremony.

About 11,400 Ohio companies sell products to more than 200 countries worldwide. Ohio is the country's seventh-largest exporter, shipping out more than US$ 45 billion in goods last year. It is the only state to report increases in exports every year since 1998.

The names of the winning companies include Alloy Engineering of Berea, a designer and producer of heat and corrosion-resistant metal products; International Transport Services of Middleburg Heights, a full-service logistics provider for air, ocean, rail and truckload shipping; Pressco Technology Inc. of Solon, which makes equipment used to conduct visual quality inspections; Volk Optical of Mentor, a company that makes products used to diagnose and treat eye conditions; and Quality Electrodynamics of Mayfield Village, a medical device engineering and manufacturing company.
