Seven U.S. cities including Akron performed well even during recession

A new ranking of the best performing cities in US include Akron, Ohio as one of the cities that did unexpectedly well during recession. The new report tracking the US economy by metro areas finds that some cities are already leaving recession behind, while others remain mired in hard times.
Akron ranks as a job-gaining city. It is amongst five of the 100 largest metro areas that managed to hold steady or add jobs in the second quarter this year, compared to the previous quarter.
The other job-gaining cities (up from two in the first quarter) were Buffalo of New York, Columbia of South Carolina, Madison of Wisconsin, and McAllen of Texas.
Dayton designated as an aerospace hub

The Dayton region in Ohio has been designated as hub of aerospace, innovation and opportunity by the state of Ohio. The goal of the ‘Aerospace Hub of Innovation’ is to help regions attract clusters of related businesses, encourage new investment and attract a pool of talent.
According to a press release, Ohio Governor, Mr. Ted Strickland made the announcement that Dayton would be the first Ohio Hub of Innovation and Opportunity. The Dayton hub, called an urban revitalization partnership, would capitalize on the area’s aerospace and technology industries to drive growth.
First Solar, local Ohio Company to construct largest solar field in the world

A Northwest Ohio company named First Solar has received approval from the Chinese government to build the largest solar field in the world. The construction of the solar energy field is expected to begin in June 2010.
The Perrysburg based facility is planning to hire an additional 134 employees for the solar field and is also adding 500-thousand square feet of manufacturing space.
BioOhio and GCIC launched new Ohio Bioscience Resource Directory

BioOhio and the Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center (GCIC) have jointly launched an expanded and improved Ohio Bioscience Resource Directory. The Directory is the most comprehensive online collection of Ohio companies, organizations, and research centers involved in the biosciences.
The web-based directory (http://www.directory.bioohio.com) or accessible at www.gcic.org) includes profiles of more than 1,900 entities and 2,600 location listings, including market-facing companies, value-chain suppliers, research organizations, and B2B service providers.
BioHio Research Park to receive USDA grant

The first new facility in the BioHio Research Park on the campus of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Develop Center will receive one-third of its total financing through two large grants.
The facility has already received over US$500,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Development for the construction of an anaerobic digestion facility. Now Schmack BioEnergy leadership was informed that it will again receive another US$500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to assist with the company’s US$3 million venture.
2 Ohio medical companies receive state incentives

Two Ohio Companies including Cleveland-based AIM Pharmakon and Cincinnati based AssureRx has received economic development incentives from the state of Ohio.
A press release from Ohio State Department of Development states that AssureRx, which is developing a genetic test for psychiatric medicines, will receive a US$1.2 million low-interest loan from the state. The company will use this amount to buy new computer and laboratory equipment, intellectual property acquisition and protection, as well as other expenses. The loan will have a 1 % interest rate in its first year and a 6 % rate for the final six years. The project is expected to create 30 jobs and help retain seven others.
AIM Pharmakon provides marketing and consulting services for the pharmaceutical industry. The company received a seven-year job-creation tax credit of over US$205,589, which it will use on a US$1 million project in its new facility in Cleveland. The company is expected to create 40 jobs.
Xunlight installs its first PV array

Toledo, Ohio based Xunlight Corporation, a leader in the design, development and manufacture of flexible and lightweight thin-film silicon solar modules, announced that the company has completed the installation of its first array of large-area flexible solar panels for its first commercial customer.
This photovoltaic system, with a nominal peak power output of 10KW, was installed at University of Toledo's Scott Park Campus of Energy and Innovation by Xunlight's systems installation team and is feeding power back into Toledo's electrical grid.
Rolls-Royce develops its fuel cell division in Northeast Ohio

Major industry player in the U.S., Rolls-Royce announced that it will expand its fuel cell research division in North Canton. The expansion program is expected to create over 60 new jobs and retain 32 jobs.
According to Ohio Governor, Mr. Ted Strickland, this type of high-tech investment is exactly what the state needs to create and expand business opportunities for Ohio companies and position Ohio as a leader in innovation and technology.
The company is expected to invest over US$3 million in processing and testing equipment, consolidating its research and development activities in North Canton.
Hybrid bus maker considers Ohio to create manufacturing plant

A Colorado based company, Proterra, that makes hybrid and all-electric city buses, is planning to create a manufacturing plant. The company is considering Ohio and other states in the Midwest for planning the site. Once the location is decided, the new plant is expected to employ several hundred people.
Ohio Governor, Mr. Ted Strickland said the talks with the bus maker are in the preliminary stage, but the state is doing everything to persuade the company to come to Ohio.
Struthers to receive new facility that convert wastes into alternative fuel

A joint venture of SouthSide Environmental Group LLC of Niles and N-Viro International Corp. of Toledo is creating a new company called, Mahoning Valley N-Viro, to be located in the Castlo Industrial Park in Struthers, Ohio. Construction of the new facility is expected to begin this year and opening is anticipated in mid-2010.
Mahoning Valley N-Viro will convert various types of waste into alternative fuel. The resulting product, N-Viro fuel, is blended with coal or petroleum coke and burned as a coal substitute in coal-fired plants. The facility is expected to create 40 new jobs.
