US-India SME forum to promote bilateral relations between India and US
September 27, 2010


A release by the CII SME Business & Trade delegation says that US India SME forum will be the anchor to promote bilateral trade between India and the US.

The CII Business & Trade delegation consisted of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) who explored trade & business opportunities in the States of Illinois (Chicago), Washington (DC), Indiana (Indianapolis) and Ohio (Cincinnati) as part of the five day visit of the CII delegation to the US from September 20 – 24.

The forum suggested a five fold objective to increase bilateral trade and investment between India and the US with particular emphasis on SMEs to understand the opportunities for Indian SMEs in the businesses they represent vis-à-vis the scenario in the US; to trade and to enter into strategic business alliances with counterparts – (SMEs/ OEMs/ aftermarket suppliers) in both and/or third countries.

Airstream Inc. receives Governor’s Excellence in Exporting Award

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and the Ohio Department of Development Director Lisa Patt-McDaniel were thrilled to honor Airstream Inc. as one of the 20 businesses and organizations to win the Governor’s Excellence in Exporting Award.

The awards have been given to companies and organizations of all sizes that have shown superior performance in exporting, or heightened awareness of exporting, as a vital component of Ohio’s economy since 1986. These organizations have helped make Ohio the seventh largest exporting state in the country.

Ohio hosted the 2010 International Economic Development Council Conference
September 24, 2010


The world's largest gathering of economic development professionals assembled at the International Economic Development Council's Annual Conference from September 26 – 29, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency in Columbus, Ohio.

The conference featured five prominent keynote speakers from Ohio who discussed new paradigms of economic development, including new tools, new uses, new ventures and new directions.

4 local Ohio Companies honored for exporting skills

Four area organizations and firms are among 20 statewide receiving Excellence in Exporting Awards from Ohio Governor Ted Strickland.

The firms are namely: The European-American Chamber of Commerce in Cincinnati; the Cincinnati law firm of Frost Brown Todd LLC; Midfest International, the annual cultural and business festival in Middletown, which this year will host the ambassador from Botswana on Oct. 1; and Richards Industries Inc. in Cincinnati.

Ohio exports totalled more than US$ 34 billion to 213 countries in 2009, and supported more than a quarter of the state's manufacturing jobs.

Edgetech I.G., Ohio honored with ‘Exporter of the Year’ award

Edgetech I.G, a Cambridge, Ohio based supplier of foam warm edge spacer systems was presented with the Ohio Exporter of the Year Award, Medium Business on September 22 at the Governor’s Excellence in Exporting Awards Ceremony in Columbus, Ohio.

This is the company’s second Exporter of the Year Award. Established in 1985, e-Awards recognize Ohio companies that have increased sales volume through exports, increased Ohio-based employment as a direct result of export activity and have implemented comprehensive strategies to expand international sales.

NorTech receives contract to aid small firms in flexible electronics efforts

NorTech has been awarded a US$ 500,000 federal contract meant to help small businesses play a role in the expansion of Northeast Ohio’s flexible electronics industry.

One of NorTech’s main missions is to grow Northeast Ohio’s flexible electronics industry, which is focused on the development of electronic devices printed on flexible materials. NorTech also works to expand the region’s advanced energy industries.

The contract should help the region’s flexible electronics industry continue to grow. To spur job creation, NorTech will engage in cluster-sourcing, an approach to working with small companies to develop joint commercialization projects that result in commercial products.

The city of Columbus named as hub of Advanced Manufacturing
September 10, 2010


Central Ohio was named as a hub for advanced energy manufacturing and storage. This designation brings thousands of dollars in grants for area companies and a higher economic development profile for the region.

Governor Ted Strickland joined Battelle CEO Jeff Wadsworth, Ohio State University President Gordon Gee and other local leaders at technology incubator TechColumbus to make the designation. As one of seven hubs statewide, Central Ohio is receiving US$ 250,000 in funding from a state Department of Development contingency fund.

4 alternative-energy firms receives US$1.7 million
September 30, 2010


As per a statement provided by the office of Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, nearly 800 existing and new employees of four area alternative-energy companies will receive US$1.7 million in job training assistance through the federal stimulus program.

The four companies are - First Solar Inc., (Perrysburg Township); Buckeye Silicon Inc., (Toledo); Nextronex Energy Systems LLC, (Perrysburg), and Xunlight Corp., (Toledo).

Two companies to expand with Ohio tax credits
September 27, 2010


SmartIT Staffing Inc. of Indianapolis and Ferco Tech Corp. of Franklin are the two companies that are planning to expand their offices. SmartIT Staffing Inc. is planning to add 54 new workers, whereas, Ferco Tech Corp. plans to add 20 more.

SmartIT earned a nine-year US$ 499,000 job creation tax credit from the Ohio Department of Development. It will spend about US$ 210,000 to expand its operations. On the other hand, Ferco Tech Corp. of Franklin earned a job creation tax credit worth US$ 51,389 to expand its manufacturing operations.

PolyOne receives grant to create 10 jobs, retain 567
September 14, 2010


PolyOne Corp. is creating 10 new jobs and retaining 567 positions as part of a US$2.6 million project. The Ohio Department of Development (ODOD) announced that the company will receive a US$ 32,000 Rapid Outreach Grant to pay for new machinery at PolyOne’s Avon Lake facility.

The company, which offers polymer materials and testing services, is expected to renovate 7,000 square feet of an existing building to create an integrated product design facility. The money comes as the ODOD awarded more than $4.8 million in economic development grants to businesses that will invest more than $33.2 million around Ohio.



Education

Ohio ranks amongst top States in college graduates
September 6, 2010


A survey by BloombergBusinessweek/Aftercollege.com's states that Ohio is one of the best states for recent college graduates. The survey is based on the number of cities listed as new-grad-friendly States.

The survey also mentions that four of Ohio’s largest cities - Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Dayton - are among the top 30 nationally for their mix of job openings, salaries and affordable living.
