Wind power is offering immense opportunity for economic development in rural areas to replace the need for housing developments. Besides other things, wind turbines also create short term and long term jobs while being erected, which is one of the reasons why wind power is seen as a boon. Wind turbines can provide a different strategy for economic development as they can generate electricity-and money for the community-while allowing land to remain in agricultural production.
Development department working hard to promote alternative energy in the state

The leaders of the Ohio Department of Development are traveling across the state to create awareness and promote the state's efforts to become a leader in the manufacturing of parts for alternative energy sources like wind mills. The department is also hosting a series of 10 seminars throughout the state to encourage interest of business owners to step into the alternative energy industry or related fields. The seminar will offer all the information on tools, resources, and financial assistance etc. on the alternative energy industry.
Ohio Grants US$ 73,000 for Solar project

The Ohio Department of Development's Advanced Energy Fund has offered a grant of US$73,000 to initiate a US$ 200,000 project, one of the largest solar projects in Ohio, on the new rooftop solar panels of Findlay Market Corp. The 114 solar panels, installed by Third Sun Solar and Wind Power, can each generate up to 190 watts of direct current. The solar project is expected to reduce the market's electric bill by about 5 % and reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 52,000 pounds a year. This project will also help to educate visitors on renewable energy benefits.
Goodyear project receives state grant

Goodyear receives state grants for its headquarters project and North Canton Hoover Campus Redevelopment Project. The State of Ohio awards US$2 million for Goodyear’s new headquarters and research center in Akron. On the other hand, the North Canton Hoover complex plan receives US$5 million as grants.
Auto-part firms being convinced to get into alternative energy tooling

The Ohio Department of Development is trying to convince automobile companies to use their expertise for building components for the alternative energy sector. People from different fields such as business, government, and economic development spoke with Ohio State government officials to outline the incentives available to help companies to enter the alternative energy supply chain.
The emerging companies in solar cells, ethanol plants and wind turbine manufacturers show the growth of alternative energy in Ohio and the opportunities for existing companies.
Chevrolet's Camaro coupe revived

Chevrolet revived its 2010 Camaro coupe, its iconic sports car, which will be on sale early next year with plenty of power and at an affordable price. As per a General Motors announcement, the sale would start at an affordable price of US$22,995 for the base V-6 model, while the cost of performance-oriented V-8 SS model will begin at US$30,995.
Columbus receives grants to explore airport development

Columbus received a grant of US$50,000 from the Ohio Department of Development to explore an airport development corporation. The grant is part of a US$1 million grant program set up through a municipal reform amendment in the state’s US$1.3 billion capital bill. The grant is expected to promote economic development in and around Port Columbus.
Ohio grants US$100 million to expand Logistics

The state of Ohio announced a US$100 million investment in the state’s logistics and distribution industry to create new jobs in the state. The investment program is part of the US$1.6 billion Ohio Bipartisan Jobs Stimulus Plan and is expected to create a seamless multimodal transportation infrastructure so that Ohio companies can expand their customer bases. Thus along with bringing business, it will also bring more jobs into the state and will increase the amount of taxes.
Training grant offered to Southwest Ohio

Southwestern Ohio will receive a National Emergency Grant of US$3.87 million in response to DHL's closure of its Wilmington facility due to the current economic situation. The grants are awarded by the U.S. Labor Secretary to expand the ability to provide additional job and skills training to help communities hit by significant economic events. The Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services have also opened a business assistance center in Wilmington, offering a number of services to workers, including job counseling.
Venture capital firm guarantees US$467,000 to local firm

Rocket Ventures, the venture-capital fund operated by the Regional Growth Partnership, is investing US$467,000 in AquaBlok Ltd., a start-up company in Maumee.
The firm has developed a clay-like material that can be used to keep contaminated sediment out of wells, ponds, lakes, and rivers.
Eaton receive US$170 million Incentives for New HQ

Eaton Corp., a leading diversified industrial manufacturer, has received another incentive package toward its construction of a US$170 million new headquarters here in the Chagrin Highlands area. The company, which is now set to receive more than US$76 million in state, county and local funds, is the recipient of a US$6 million Rapid Outreach Grant for the costs of the construction of the 470,000-square-foot office project.
Ohio ranked No. 44 for competitiveness

A report from Boston-based Beacon Hill Institute ranked Ohio 44th overall for its competitiveness. The measurement was done on the basis of a combination of individual grades on government and fiscal policy, security, technology, environmental policy, technology research and other factors. Ohio’s individual rankings were a mixed bag in the report, with its security ranking at No. 10 in the nation and infrastructure leap to No. 19.
Nestle opens new center of product development in Solon

Nestle Foodservices that operates an extensive prepared-food production and packaging plant in Solon, opens a new professional food service product-development facility on Bainbridge Road.
The new facility housing 67,000 square feet of offices, conference rooms, culinary laboratories and test kitchens will enable the company to conduct detailed meal- and menu-development sessions with its highest-volume customers.
Techneglas site receive US$5 million

Plastics Company repackages itself

Schulman Inc., has long been relying on automotive customers for a huge portion of its North American sales. Now, the Fairlawn plastics company also plans to shift its focus to packaging of everything from heads of lettuce to shampoo and so on. The last few years have seen many companies and organizations constructing or renovating buildings based on the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Rating System, commonly known as the LEED certification. Of late, two large area companies have built structures seeking LEED certification. FirstEnergy's new West Akron campus is believed to be the largest of Akron's first big green office buildings.
On the other hand, the J.M. Smucker Co. in Orrville has renovated its J.M. Smucker Store and Café and has received LEED certification for it. The company has also constructed a new office building at the food company's headquarters under the same certifications, which is in the final stages of examination.

Wisconsin firm to bring 300 jobs to Springfield

Red Roof providing incentives to franchisees

Columbus-based hotel chain, Red Roof Inns Inc., is counting on a sleek and simple hotel redesign to be a major part of the chain in the future. Red Roof has rolled out an incentive package for its NextGen redesign that includes a US$50,000 credit to offset fees, a seven-year waiver on royalty fees and a 2 percent cap, down from 4.5 percent, afterward for the first 50 franchise deals.
Red Roof is rolling out the incentive just as it moves towards completion of a US$250 million renovation of its 350 hotels, more than 30 of which are in Ohio. The renovation is expected to be complete by 2009 fall.

Ohio aims to create innovation hubs

Ohio Lt. Governor, Mr. Lee Fisher is identifying the state’s first innovation hub by the end of 2009. This move is expected to create jobs from the region’s robust industry clusters and research discoveries. The Ohio Hubs of Innovation and Opportunity (OHIO) program would create at least a dozen targeted investment zones near research centers and universities across Ohio.
Ohio’s innovation hubs will use proximity and a shared focus on industry clusters to maximize the impact of new ideas in such fields as bioscience, aerospace and aviation, environmental technologies and distribution and logistics.
Composite Advantage to have new manufacturing site

Composite Advantage LLC showcased its advanced materials manufacturing facility in Dayton, Ohio on 17 October 2008. The 22,000-square-foot building will let the company add new products and mold larger fiber-reinforced polymer composite parts up to 52 feet.

Ohio and Jerusalem sign pact to share bioscience companies

Government and economic development officials from Ohio and Israel have signed a partnership agreement that could pave the way for joint business development and investment in bioscience companies.
BioOhio, Ohio’s bioscience company developer, and BioJerusalem, a similar development organization in Jerusalem has signed this agreement that could lead to more biomedical companies and jobs in Ohio.
