Dayton companies introduce online database to attract business

The Dayton Tooling and Manufacturing Association and TechSolve, an advanced-manufacturing support organization based in Cincinnati, have come together to introduce a new online system designed to help them attract new business from customers across the United States and abroad.

The system offers a free online database that is searchable by manufacturer, region, industries served, production capabilities and quality certifications.

Customers looking for a service can use the network to compare suppliers, by viewing profiles of the companies, and solicit bids for services. The Ohio Department of Development provided funding to get the system up and running.

Seven U.S. cities including Akron performed well even during recession

A new ranking of the best performing cities in US include Akron, Ohio as one of the cities that did unexpectedly well during recession. The new report tracking the US economy by metro areas finds that some cities are already leaving recession behind, while others remain mired in hard times.

Akron ranks as a job-gaining city. It is amongst five of the 100 largest metro areas that managed to hold steady or add jobs in the second quarter this year, compared to the previous quarter.

The other job-gaining cities (up from two in the first quarter) were Buffalo of New York, Columbia of South Carolina, Madison of Wisconsin, and McAllen of Texas.

FirstEnergy receives funds for Smart Grid

FirstEnergy Service Co., a division of First Energy Corp. of Akron, was awarded US$57.5 million federal stimulus funds to implement smart grid technology. The funding is part of the US$3.4 billion to energy companies and cities across the country to modernize the nation's power grid and improve energy efficiency.

FirstEnergy is a diversified energy company headquartered in Akron and involved in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, as well as energy management and other energy-related services.

Wind Energy
Wind turbine manufacturing can create more jobs in Dayton

Ohio aims to have 12.5 % of its energy coming from renewable sources by the year 2025 and wind energy is going to be a huge contributor. Wind energy is one of those sources, which is growing in popularity across the country.

Resurgence in instillations of wind turbines is anticipated in the United States in the coming times and Dayton area is expected to play a part in the supply chain of turbines in the country.

A large number of wind turbine parts are imported to the United States and as per the Dayton Development Coalition the city has the resources to manufacture these parts.

Dayton can manufacture and supply turbine parts to other areas in the state and country that can sustain wind power and this is also expected to create new jobs.

Solar Energy
First Solar to construct largest solar field in the world

A Northwest Ohio company named First Solar has received approval from the Chinese government to build the largest solar field in the world. The construction of the solar energy field is expected to begin in June 2010.

The Perrysburg based facility is planning to hire an additional 134 employees for the solar field and is also adding 500-thousand square feet of manufacturing space.

Ohio retains No. 4 ranking in Business Facilities magazine's annual list

Business Facilities magazine's recently released 2009 Biotechnology Strength
Report ranks Ohio at No. 4 among all states. California claimed top ranking, followed by Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

The magazine says that the biotech sector has cemented its status as a building block for future growth, so it is being protected in most states from budget cuts.

The publication’s ranking criteria included state R&D funding and venture capital investments, concentrated occupational employment in biotech, bioscience-targeted tax exemptions, number of biotech facilities, biotech patents generated, university grant funding, and bioscience higher education degrees, among other factors.

BioOhio and GCIC launched new Ohio Bioscience Resource Directory

BioOhio and the Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center (GCIC) have jointly launched an expanded and improved Ohio Bioscience Resource Directory. The Directory is the most comprehensive online collection of Ohio companies, organizations, and research centers involved in the biosciences.

The web-based directory (http://www.directory.bioohio.com or accessible at www.gcic.org) includes profiles of more than 1,900 entities and 2,600 location listings, including market-facing companies, value-chain suppliers, research organizations, and B2B service providers.

Automotive Industry
Select Industries Corp. planning expansion in Dayton

Select Industries Corp., one of the foremost American manufacturers, is planning to expand its facility in Dayton.

Select Industries is diversifying from its automotive industry base and is working to acquire business from other states. The company aims to invest US$2.55 million to build a 28,500 square foot addition in Dayton.

The project is expected to help retain 105 jobs and create 50 within three years.

Electric Vehicles
Myers Motors unveiled two-passenger version of its three-wheeled electric vehicle

Tallmadge in northeastern Ohio based company Myers Motors unveiled the first two-passenger version of its three-wheeled electric vehicle last month at an environmental conference in New York.

The company has started taking pre-orders and is going to ship the vehicles before the end of next year. The new two-seat model will cost less than US$30,000 and will go 60 miles on a charge. The company is considering pricing options that would allow customers to pay more for a 100-mile range or less for 40 miles.

The company also expects to hire as many as 50 people in Tallmadge by late next year to build the vehicles and envisions hundreds of workers within a few years.

JumpStart receives National Award for increasing access to capital

JumpStart Inc., the Northeast Ohio based venture development organization was named a recipient of the State Science and Technology Institute's (SSTI) 2009 Excellence in Technology-Based Economic Development Awards.

JumpStart, the venture development organization that accelerates the progress of high potential, early-stage businesses, was the sole award winner in the Increasing Access to Capital category, as an initiative that enhances the ability of companies to access start-up capital.

Another organization within Ohio, TechColumbus, was also a winner of one of the six awards from SSTI. The Columbus-based organization was the sole winner in the Building Entrepreneurial Capacity category.

TechColumbus, as an organization, accelerates the growth of the innovation economy by providing vital resources and assistance to people and enterprises that depend on technology to achieve their business goals.

Both JumpStart and TechColumbus receive significant support from Ohio Third Frontier, a program of the state, which catalyzes innovation to transform Ohio's economy.

Cambridge Home Health Care Service receives 2009 business growth award

Akron-based Cambridge Home Health Care service was honored with the 2009 Cascade Capital Corporation Business Growth Award. The award honors businesses located within Summit, Medina, Portage, Wayne, Ashland, and Stark Counties that have achieved significant sales or employment growth.

This was the fifteenth year for the annual award, and the eleventh year for Cambridge Home Health Care to receive the award.

Marietta listed as top 100 adventure towns in United States

The city of Marietta in Ohio is the only city listed as one of the Top 100 Adventure Towns in the United States. The list of the top 100 adventure towns appeared in the October 2009 issue of National Geographic Adventure Magazine.

The city is located at the confluence of two major rivers and in close proximity to outdoor opportunities available in the Wayne National Forest. Marietta ranks 48 in the top 100 list.

National Geographic Adventure Magazine created the list of the Top 100 Adventure Towns as a guide to the best locations around the country for outdoor recreation, dining, attractions, and unique places to visit and stay.
