Appliance maker Whirlpool Corp. to expand Ottawa (Ohio) plant

With financial assistance from the State, appliance maker Whirlpool Corp. said it will proceed with a US$4.4 million project to expand a formerly closed and bankrupt freezer manufacturing plant in Putnam County village in Ottawa, Ohio, thereby creating nearly 200 jobs.
The Michigan-based appliance maker purchased the 500,000 square-foot factory in December 2009, recalled 125 employees to restart production of chest freezers in January 2010.
The company has decided to keep the factory operating by making its Whirlpool-brand freezers. The company said in a statement that it will expand employment to 190 this year and up to as many as 324 by the end of 2011, depending on demand.
P&G on expansion mode; expected to create over 300 jobs in Cincinnati

Procter & Gamble is expected to create more than 300 new jobs in Cincinnati as it plans to consolidate its logistics work from 40 locations across the country.
P&G’s Winton Hills Business Center in Cincinnati is being considered as the site of the US$20 million expansion and renovation project which could create 336 new jobs in addition to retaining 562 jobs through the project.
The State of Ohio agreed to award more than US$18 million in tax credits to the project in an effort to lure it here.
Ohio transportation officials expects record construction spending this year

As per Ohio transportation officials, 2010 will be the biggest construction season in the State history. With aid from the federal stimulus money, Ohio will award about US$2 billion in transportation construction projects, thereby outnumbering past years projects by more than 30 %.
The Ohio Department of Transportation said that the agency and its local partners will have more than 1,600 projects under construction this year. In the eight-county region that includes most of central Ohio, 53 projects will cost a collective US$208 million.
GE Aviation announces Research Center in Dayton

GE Aviation has announced its plans to initiate a new electric power systems research and development center near Dayton.
Ohio's Third Frontier program, which funds investment in innovative technology projects, will provide a US$7.6 million grant for the project, estimated to cost US$51 million. GE Aviation said that the center will work on advanced electrical systems for ground vehicles, aircraft and naval ships.
The exact location will be decided later this year and the University of Dayton Research Institute is also expected to work with GE Aviation. As per Ohio officials, the new center will add 10 to 15 new jobs in its first year (which is in 2012), with the potential to add 100 to 200 to GE Aviation's current 1,000-plus employees in the Dayton area, depending on future contracts.
Growth seen in Dayton-area exports

Despite a fall in Ohio’s total exports in 2009, Dayton-area companies had a strong year in some sectors. For the past several years, export numbers for Dayton metro area companies have grown. As per the latest number from the International Trade Administration, it shows an export value of US$4.5 billion for the Dayton area in 2008, up from US$4.3 billion in 2007 and US$4.2 billion in 2006.

Ohio Governor Mr. Ted Strickland and Ohio Department of Development Director Ms. Lisa Patt-McDaniel announced that the Ohio ‘Job Ready Sites’ Program has approved the first two communities for site certification.
These approved sites will assist in business attraction and expansion efforts by accommodating investment and job creation in Ohio. Certification in the Ohio Job Ready Sites Program ensures future investors that the property exceeds site selection standards and includes the necessary attributes demanded by today’s leading corporations.
The Ohio Job Ready Sites Program was created to bolster Ohio’s portfolio of commercial and industrial developable sites. Properties in this program are strategically chosen for their ability to provide optimal infrastructure capabilities and attract economy-shifting investment.
The City of Middletown (Butler County) has been awarded Job Ready Site Certification for the Smart Offices at East Pointe Centre. The Middletown site was among 18 projects that received grant money in 2006 of US$2.2 million from the state program. The project now sports a 50,000 square foot office building that has achieved a Gold certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The site has room for two additional buildings of up to 90,000 square feet each. The project has so far created 114 jobs.
Solar and wind will aid in powering water treatment plant

The City of Toledo is putting a US$3 million Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant to use. The city will use the federal grant to change traffic lights to LEDs and will also implement a program to help residential homeowners become more energy-efficient.
The first project for the city will be the construction of a wind turbine and a solar field each to produce one megawatt of energy, which should be built within the next year.
Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority receives US$15 million to create green jobs

The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority is receiving a US$15 million grant with the goal of creating jobs by helping businesses with energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.
The Toledo area is one of 25 regions to receive a total of US$452 million in Recovery Act funding under the Retrofit Ramp-Up initiative.
The new program has the potential to leverage up to US$300 million worth of private investment in greater Toledo.
The port authority will develop a marketing plan over the next 60 days to iron out details of how businesses and homeowners can apply for help.
Analysis shows that Bioscience boosts employment in Ohio

A new analysis shows that Ohio's bioscience-sector jobs rose 17.9 % from 2000 to 2008, with a significant share of the growth coming from pharmaceutical companies and research firms.
Columbus-based BioOhio, a nonprofit trade group, commissioned the study, which was overseen by Cleveland State University. The report's goal is to highlight the group's activities and burnish Ohio's credentials as a site for bioscience companies.
As of 2008, the Northeast Ohio region, made up of 21 counties (including Summit), was home to 18,933 bioscience jobs, or 34.1 % of the state's total in that sector.
BioOhio officials said they expect this area to grow again after a period of consolidation that affected just about all manufacturing businesses.

Five Ohio universities proclaimed as new Centers of Excellence

New centers of excellence focusing on advanced materials and sensor technology were announced at five Ohio universities. Ohio State University launched a center of excellence in Materials, Manufacturing Technologies and Nanotechnology, while the University of Cincinnati announced a focus on nanoscale sensors.
Creating centers of excellence at Ohio universities has been a cornerstone of Ohio Governor, Mr. Strickland's plan to create the University System of Ohio, which linked all of Ohio's public colleges and universities and urged collaboration among them and Ohio's private universities. The plan also seeks to eliminate duplication of educational programs among Ohio's public universities and to reduce spending.
Minority Business Enterprise Division gets new Director

Lisa Patt-McDaniel, Director of the Ohio Department of Development, announced the appointment of Mr. Ronald Wiley as Director of the Department’s Minority Business Enterprise Division. He will be responsible for leading the Division’s efforts to create, grow, and develop minority-owned and -operated business enterprises throughout the state.
