Composite Technologies to open second plant in Dayton
February 26, 2010


Dayton based Composite Technologies Co. LLC plans to expand its business of molding pallets and selling resin from recycled plastics. In this regard, the company has launched a US$3 million expansion to open a second manufacturing operation in Dayton.

The 200,000-square-foot plant will begin operating in April, while the company will continue to run its original plant.

The company specializes in compression and injection molding pallets and custom-molded products from recycled and wide-spec virgin resin.

Israel's Sensible Medical Innovations opens first U.S. office in Columbus, Ohio

An Israeli company named Sensible Medical Innovations Ltd., which is developing a non-invasive device to monitor patients with congestive heart failure, is opening its first U.S. office in Columbus, Ohio.

Founded in 2007, Sensible Medical is developing an imaging device that marries medical and information technology to examine internal organs. The device could replace the exploratory surgery now needed to detect congestive heart failure. The company at present has one employee in Ohio, but expects to add more as it tests the device with Ohio State and the Cleveland Clinic.

Sensible Medical is one of the three Israeli heart companies that received a total investment of US$1 million in May 2009 from the Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center, led by the Cleveland Clinic.

Battelle’s energy research contracts give revenue boost to the company

Despite the recession, Columbus-based research giant Battelle increased its revenue to nearly US$ 5 billion. The company earned US$ 280 million more in 2009 than in 2008.

According to Mr. Martin Inglis, Battelle's chief financial officer, “Most of the increase, about US$ 200 million, came from energy-research contracts for work performed directly by Battelle and at seven national labs it manages.”

The increase in energy funding, plus more-modest increases in health research and general science projects at the national labs, more than offset a decline in national-security research from US$ 845 million in 2008 to US$ 780 million in 2009.

India offers enormous opportunities for new markets

India has increasingly becoming an important market for Ohio. Being a growing middle class and a developing economy, India offers enormous market opportunities for businesses to grow. To further enhance the opportunities for companies, The Summit County Mayors Association had a symposium on exporting to India.

Since the year 2000, Ohio exports to India have been growing every year. At present, India is Ohio's 19th-largest export market and the rankings are expected to climb high.

Ohio companies shipped US$427 million worth of products to India in 2008, which was a 27 % increase from the previous year. Machinery, medical instruments, chemicals, plastic, iron and steel and aerospace products are the main exports to India.

India’s immense growth is mainly due to the rapid rise of its middle class, which has created innumerable consumers for different products.

Teradata partners with Itron Inc. for ‘smart-grid’ market

Teradata Corp. has announced a partnership with Itron Inc. in creating a tool that will help power companies organize and share information.

The software tool, called “Active SmartGrid Analytics”, includes a Teradata data warehouse tool along with Itron tools. The idea is to offer energy companies access to customer information in ways that are meant to be helpful to both power providers and customers.

With about 400 employees at its Miami Township headquarters, Teradata is focused on database software, enterprise data warehousing and more.

Governor discusses Ohio's Strategic Energy Investments at National Energy Forum in Washington D.C.

Ohio Governor, Mr. Ted Strickland made a keynote address at the EnergyBiz Leadership Forum, a gathering of national energy industry leaders and policy makers, in Washington, D.C.

In the forum, the Governor discussed how strategic investments and a skilled workforce are positioning Ohio to be a leading global supplier in clean energy. In fact, Mr. Strickland was the only U.S. governor to make a keynote address at the forum, which was produced by Energy Central, which publishes EnergyBiz magazine, a leading national energy trade publication.

Mr. Strickland in his speech specified that the State of Ohio is committed to making targeted and strategic investments in advanced energy, which is regarded as one of the growing industries that is strengthening Ohio's economy and creating jobs for its people.

The State of Ohio is doing a lot of work and developing many partnerships that are helping earn Ohio the reputation as an innovation leader in clean energy and clean energy technologies. The Governor also said that he expects Ohio to soon become one of the major advanced energy states.

Governor announces Ohio Industry Energy Efficiency Awards

18 Ohio projects were announced to receive more than US$11.8 million in industry efficiency grant awards funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s State Energy Program.

The announcement was made by Mr. Ted Strickland, Ohio Governor, Ms. Lisa Patt-McDaniel, director of the Ohio Department of Development, and Mr. Mark Shanahan, energy advisor to Governor Strickland.

These industry efficiency awards are funded through Ohio’s US$96 million State Energy Program. Awarded projects exemplify the goals of the Recovery Act’s State Energy Program to sustain Ohio’s industry by saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to create or preserve jobs.

Ohio establishes fund to invest in energy projects

The state of Ohio has established a public-private partnership named ‘Ohio Energy Gateway Fund’, which is expected to make over US$ 80 million available to invest in energy projects and energy technology companies.

The Ohio Energy Gateway Fund includes US$ 40 million in federal economic stimulus funds and state job stimulus funds and is expected to raise at least an additional US$ 40 million through partnerships with sources of private investment capital.

These funds are proposed to support projects including wind, solar, hydroelectric, nuclear and geothermal energy; electric batteries and fuel cells, energy efficiency and energy storage.

Edge Plastic receives Advanced Energy Award from Ohio Governor

Mr. Ted Strickland, Ohio Governor gave a special visit to Edge Plastics in Mansfield, Ohio and awarded the company an Advanced Energy Award.

Edge Plastics is receiving nearly US$ 652,000 to install two injection molding machines used to manufacture large household containers. The project will result in an energy savings of 35 % and help create and retain 44 jobs.

The funding award to Edge Plastics was one of 18 Ohio projects to receive more than $11.8 million in Industry Efficiency Grant Awards through the American Reinvestment Act's State Energy Program.

Ferro Electronic Materials Business Unit receives grant for Solar Cell research

Ferro Electronic Materials has been awarded US$1 million by the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD) to develop advanced durability sealing systems for solar cells.

In this project, Ferro will engineer a vitreous glass frit system to provide reliable air-tight and water-tight seals for thin-film solar cells. If successful, the new sealing materials will enable Ferro to solve a significant problem with second- and third-generation thin-film solar cells.

This technology will be the starting point in developing a seal material for thin-film solar cells.

Ohio leads nation on water pollution control projects
February 18, 2010


According to Ohio state and federal officials, Ohio leads the nation with 274 water pollution control projects being funded in part with federal stimulus money. Besides, the state ranks third with 62 drinking water projects funded with stimulus money.

The water pollution control construction projects are helping protect or improve Ohio’s water resources, whereas the drinking water projects will help provide safe drinking water for Ohioans.

In addition, this has also created or retained over 700 jobs. The projects have used over US$ 279 million stimulus funds and over US$ 196.1 million low-interest loan money.

Teradata named to innovation list for the eighth consecutive year

Ohio based Teradata Corp. has been ranked again in the Intelligent Enterprise 2010 Editors’ Choice awards. It is the eighth year that the data warehousing and analytics company has been named on the magazine’s list of 12 technology providers “that lead the way in innovation and business optimization,” Teradata said.

The yearly list is set by the editorial staff of TechWeb’s Intelligent Enterprise based on research of the past year’s coverage and reader feedback, the company said.

Geauga and Medina are among the top 10 healthiest counties in Ohio: Report
February 17, 2010


A new report by the University of Wisconsin's Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has declared that Delaware County, about 20 miles north of Columbus, has Ohio’s healthiest residents.

The report says that Northeast Ohio, this year, can boast two of the state's 10 healthiest counties. Geauga County is ranked second, whereas Medina County is ranked fourth on the list.

NorTech to bestow 2010 awards to 3 bioscience innovations

NorTech, the Northeast Ohio’s technology economic development organization, is going to honor three bioscience products with its 2010 Innovation Awards. The annual awards recognize innovation achievements of the region’s organizations and leaders.

A NorTech release says that 12 winners were selected this year from industries including instruments, controls and electronics; advanced materials; information and communication technologies; and advanced energy, in addition to bioscience.

The event will showcase some very exciting innovations being developed and commercialized in Northeast Ohio. NorTech believes that the innovations being honored this year will help advance existing technology industries and build new ones throughout the region.

Exacter, Inc. honored as one of Ohio’s top technology companies at 2009 Business Innovation Awards

Exacter, Inc. has won two awards at the Tech Columbus 2009 Business Innovation Awards including, Most Outstanding Service and Outstanding Start-Up Company.

A Business Innovation Award from Tech Columbus is the most prestigious honor for tech companies in the State of Ohio. Candidates must be nominated by an outside party and undergo a rigorous evaluation process from fellow business leaders in the state. This year over 240 companies competed for 13 awards, with Exacter, Inc. winning two of them.

The company is also emerging as an important player for helping utilities prepare for Smart Grid deployments.

TechColumbus Innovation Awards honors leaders for their technology and innovation achievements

TechColumbus announced winners of its annual Innovation Awards, which recognize Central Ohio leaders and companies for their outstanding achievements in technology leadership and innovation in 2009. Thirteen business leaders and two high school students were recognized at a ceremony at the Columbus Convention Center.

Mr. Ted Ford, president and CEO of TechColumbus said "These awards showcase the incredible contribution that companies, both large and small, are having in our community and beyond."

Ohio creates Centers of Excellence in Biomedicine and Health Care

Ohio Governor, Mr. Ted Strickland announced the creation of Ohio's new Centers of Excellence in Biomedicine and Health Care industry. The Centers are being created at 14 universities throughout the state, each focusing on a particular aspect of bioscience research.

According to Mr. Strickland, the attempt is an effort to lead the nation in biomedical research and innovation. The Centers are being funded by a variety of sources, including foundations, state and federal dollars. Additional duty is being provided by the Third Frontier Fund.

UDRI receives money to help launch Ohio’s aerospace hub

The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) has received over US$ 250,000 from Ohio Governor Mr. Ted Strickland and the state of Ohio to help commence the state's newly designated Aerospace Hub for Innovation and Opportunity. UDRI will act as the lead partner organization of the aerospace hub.

The funding will aid the new hub program to foster technological innovation and opportunity, as well as spur economic development across the state.

This award from the state comes within the larger context of the Ohio Department of Development's recent economic growth strategy, the Ohio Hub of Innovation and Opportunity, which aims to underscore the specialized industries and economies of various Ohio regions.

Ohio attracts material handling and logistics buyers to its National Industry Event
February 10, 2010


Ohio is attracting innumerable material handling and logistics buyers from more than 60 countries at the 2010 North American Material Handling and Logistics Show (NA 2010) at the Cleveland I-X Center from 26 – 29 April 2010.

NA 2010 is sponsored by the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA) and is the most comprehensive showcase of material handling and logistics equipment, systems technologies in the United States this year.

Mr. John Nofsinger, CEO of MHIA says, "There will be no better place to address and respond to new and complex manufacturing and supply chain realities than NA 2010. This event will provide the reliable information, solid advice and the tools you need now more than ever as you make your capital expenditure and supply chain investment decisions."
