Columbus ranks high in economic vitality

Columbus topped all other Ohio cities in Brookings vitality study. The Ohio capital fared better than any other Ohio city and most others in the Midwest in a ranking based on economic vitality. The rankings, compiled by the Brookings Institution, looked at the nation's 100 largest metropolitan areas in the first quarter of 2009 using measures such as change in unemployment and home prices and the value of goods and services produced there.

Columbus placed 40th, well ahead of Cincinnati and Cleveland, which ranked 61st and 64th respectively. Toledo came in at 89th, just behind Youngstown at 87th position.

Ohio support enhances entrepreneurship

Ohio offers a lot of support to enhance the business climate of the state and make it attractive to many entrepreneurs in a variety of industries ranging from automotive to polymers etc.

Ohio tax reform rewards various entrepreneurial and start-up firms. The main benefits offered are not taxing the firms in the first US$1 million in annual gross receipts, which helps them to establish and gain profits.

The state has also introduced many innovative programs and services, which help Ohio entrepreneurs and small business owners. A few of them include effective communication, collaboration, creativity and technology support etc., which encourages sustainable growth for entrepreneurs.

Hardin County receives a Wind Energy LLC

Invenergy, a clean and renewable energy company, has announced the formation of a wind energy plant in Hardin County. Wind energy, without a doubt, is the wave of the future, and Invenergy has formed the Hardin County Wind Energy LLC in order to bring the Hardin County Wind Farm to fruition. Invenergy will be managing, developing, constructing and operating the turbines to produce wind energy with a goal to be an independent energy producer.

US$10 billion nuclear plant boosts Ohio Power

To enhance the nation’s energy needs, a new strategic coalition of energy companies has come together to build a nuclear power plant in southern Ohio. It is estimated that it would take over a decade and US$10 billion to build the plant in Piketon, Ohio.

As per officials, construction of the plant would begin by 2015 and the plant would become operational by 2020 or 2021. Ohio Governor, Mr. Ted Strickland mentioned that the new jobs and investments, which are going to be created by the 3,000 construction jobs and other spending, would impact the economy positively.

Government grants help alternative energy farming

A US$250,000 grant for the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center is supposed to let researchers begin assessing the potential for farmers in Northeast Ohio to grow crops, not just for consumption, but also for purposes of alternative energy. The grant, approved by members of the Fund for Our Economic Future, is an effort to expand Northeast Ohio's US$8.2 billion agriculture industry.

AEP signed on to buy solar energy from Ohio facility

In a move to boost its renewable energy portfolio, the Columbus-based American Electric Power Company Inc. has signed an agreement to buy the solar energy output from an in-the-works northwest Ohio facility.

The AEP Ohio subsidiary of the company signed a 20-year agreement with Wyandot Solar LLC, a subsidiary of Boulder, Colorado based developer Juwi Solar Inc. The company plans to begin building a 10 megawatt solar facility in Wyandot County in November ’09 that could be up and running a year from now.

Ohio ranks No. 4 in U.S. for growth of green energy careers

According to a recent report prepared by Pew Charitable Trusts, Ohio ranked No. 4 nationally in the number of clean-energy jobs at the end of 2007 with 35,250 green jobs.

California led the way, with about 125,000 jobs in the sector. Ohio has over 2,500 clean-energy companies in the state.

The national employment in clean energy grew 9.1 percent from 1998 to 2007, for a total of 770,000 jobs in five categories: clean energy, energy efficiency, environmentally friendly production, conservation and pollution mitigation, and training and support.

Ohio has great opportunity to diversify its wind trends

As per the Great Lakes Wind Network, the traditional Northeast Ohio businesses have a great opportunity to diversify into this rapidly growing field. This growth is further enhanced because everything, including government legislation to public sentiments, is driving the demand for alternative energy.

Meigs County, Ohio might get 1,600 new jobs

Ohio Governor, Mr. Ted Strickland announced the names of the state manufacturing projects that are supposed to receive funding awards from the US$150 million advanced energy portion of the Ohio Bipartisan Job Stimulus Plan. The first two amongst them are a clean coal power plant, which is expected to bring as many as 1,600 construction jobs and 165 permanent operating jobs to nearby Meigs County.

JPMorgan Chase adding 1,150 jobs in central Ohio

JPMorgan Chase has announced to add over 1,150 jobs in central Ohio in the coming three years. The announcement came after months of lobbying from state and local officials and tax-incentives packages, which were lucrative enough not to pass up.

As per company officials, it is expected that over 1,000 of the new jobs will be split between Chase's McCoy Center in Polaris and its lending facility near Easton Town Center. The remaining 150 jobs will be at the company's Cleveland Avenue offices in Westerville.

‘Keys to Success’ honors women business owners in Ohio

Ohio has started the process of accepting nominations for the 2009 Ohio Keys to Success Awards, which honor women business owners.

The Keys to Success Award is sponsored by the Ohio Department of Development's Division of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, U.S. Small Business Administration, and Small Business Development Centers of Ohio.

The criteria for getting nominated for this award is that the candidate must be female majority owners of companies with annual revenues in excess of US$250,000, except in the Service category (minimum US$200,000 in annual revenue) and Rising Star category (minimum US$150,000 in annual revenue).

Keys to Success awards will be selected in the nine categories of Manufacturing/Technology, Service, Wholesale/Retail, Real Estate/Construction, Healthcare/Medical, Marketing/Advertising/Public Relations, Social Entrepreneur, Youth Entrepreneur and Rising Star.

Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) rated as Computerworld’s Best Places to Work in IT

Consecutively, for the fourth year in a row, OCLC (the world’s largest library service and membership cooperative based in Dublin, Ohio) has been named as one of Computerworld’s Best Places to Work in IT. OCLC placed number 38 on the 2009 list, up from 51 on the 2008 list, and 86 in 2007.

Cleveland firm on the verge of a huge medical breakthrough

Arteriocyte Medical Systems, a small Cleveland based company, is on the verge of a huge medical breakthrough in the field of artificial human blood.

The company expects that it can grow fresh blood faster that what the human body would naturally grow with the help of a machine that produces actual human blood.

The military has awarded the company a contract to continue the research and development of the artificial blood making machine for battlefield use as it can save as many as 20 lives per week in battle conditions.

U.S. Department of Commerce confers development award to JumpStart Inc.

The U.S. Department of Commerce conferred a national economic development award on Cleveland-based business development group JumpStart Inc. for Excellence in Urban or Suburban Economic Development. JumpStart Inc., which is a nonprofit organization, fosters the growth of early stage companies.

Perrysburg solar firm gets US$10 million state loan

Willard & Kelsey Solar Group LLC, Perrysburg, Ohio has been awarded a US$10 million loan from the US$150 million advanced energy portion of Ohio’s Bipartisan Job Stimulus Plan. The company said that it plans to initially employ 400 people to make thin-film solar panels, starting this year. It will use loan proceeds to expand production capacity over the next two years.
