Wind business growing in Ohio; Indian cos show interest

According to Ohio Gov., Mr. Ted Strickland, the wind energy industry is emerging in Ohio. Strickland says Ohio's recently passed energy bill is creating a wind energy market, which is vital if the state is to attract wind turbine manufacturing.

According to Mr. Strickland, companies in Spain and India have expressed interest about investing in the state, which would help Ohio's economy as its traditional steel and auto manufacturing base struggles.

Toledo firms receive energy grants

Two Toledo, Ohio companies, SuGanit Systems and Xunlight Corp., were among 10 recipients of US$9 million in grants through Ohio’s Third Frontier Advanced Energy Program. Xunlight was awarded US$995,577 for its online performance measurement for roll-to-roll thin film photovoltaic manufacturing project. The 25-megawatt line is scheduled for completion during the first quarter of 2009. SuGanit Systems also received nearly US$1 million from the program to scale up its cellulosic ethanol biomass pretreatment and fermentation processes.

Northeast Ohio ranks fourth in corporate headquarters

The 16-county Northeast Ohio region ranked fourth among the nation's largest metropolitan areas in its share of people working at business headquarters. This report by Team NEO, the region's business-attraction group, has made the state a stalwart when it comes to the number of corporate headquarters.

As per Team NEO's research, as a percent of the total work force, headquarters employment in Northeast Ohio ranked higher than Boston, Chicago and Atlanta.

Ohio hopes that development plan will improve economy

Ohio leaders are hoping that an economic development plan targeting nine key industries and federal aid for road and bridge projects will position the state to reap the benefits of an eventual economic recovery.

The Ohio Department of Development has a plan to try to use tax breaks and other incentives to attract nine industries that align with the state's core strengths, including aerospace, advanced energy and the logistics industry.

According to Ohio Lt. Gov., Mr. Lee Fisher, the state will also attempt to target flagship companies to drive economic development.

Ohio Mayors visiting India in Feb

Mayor Karen Fritschel of the City of Stow said that the Ohio Mayors’ trip to India is on high priority. Mayor Fritschel along with other Summit County officials has rescheduled their initial plan to visit four cities in India in November 08 because of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai and has now scheduled the trip for Feb 1 through Feb 13.

The objectives of the mission are to seek export relationships and investments between Ohio and Indian businesses; and to encourage relationships with the Indian Chambers of Commerce and associations. The mission will concentrate particularly on the following industries:

  • Alternative and Renewable Energy
  • Automotive components & accessories
  • Plastics & polymers
  • Industrial Controls, Automation and Electronics

Ohio governor seeks US$1 trillion in aid

Ohio Gov., Mr. Ted Strickland is one of the five Democratic governors in US seeking US$1 trillion in aid from Washington as part of an economic recovery package for the states. The US$1 trillion aid also includes US$250 billion as education fund.

The governors said that they need the cash immediately to avoid cuts to crucial staples such as education, social services and infrastructure.

 

Grants and Aids

Ohio offers grants to Solar and Wind power industries

Ohio is initiating steps to turn the state into a hub for the renewable energy industry by offering grants to increase the use of solar and wind power.

According to the development officials, the US$3.5 million program for residential projects will lead to 260 wind turbines and 200 solar hot water systems and help the renewable industry to create thousands of jobs in Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Development puts estimates for new wind power-related jobs in Ohio as high as 30,000. The solar power industry could create up to 8,000 jobs in the long-term.

Ohio's renewable energy incentives for residential markets have led to 17 solar hot-water projects, 31 wind turbines and 88 solar-electric installations in recent years.

City of Cincinnati and three local firms receive grants

Ohio, Lt. Gov., Mr. Lee Fisher announced that the city of Cincinnati and three Tri-State firms are among 14 companies and municipalities sharing US$4.1 million in economic development grants from the Ohio Department of Development.

New Initiatives introduced for Ohio Small Businesses

Ohio Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Lee Fisher announced several new initiatives that have been implemented by the Ohio Department of Development's Entrepreneurship and Small Business Division including a Small Business Hotline, Small Business Directory, and Small Business Register.

These services are free and help enhance the Division’s outreach to Ohio’s small businesses, displaced workers, and Ohioans living below the poverty level who may be interested in starting a business.

New fund created targeting Northeast Ohio life science companies

A venture capitalist and an entrepreneur from the Pittsburgh area named Corridor Venture Partners have launched a new fund, which in part aims at Northeast Ohio companies. The firm is targeting US$50 million at early-stage life science companies located between Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

Third Frontier offers money to six Northeast Ohio companies

Six companies in Northeast Ohio working on technology projects were awarded nearly US$4 million in grants as the Ohio Third Frontier Commission offered more than US$14 million to projects throughout the state.

The money awarded to Northeast Ohio projects went to the development and commercialization of advanced energy technologies, including fuel cells, wind turbines, solar cells and energy-efficiency technologies.

One grant also went to an Irish biomedical device company opening a U.S. office in Cleveland.
