Economy


i) Real estate market of Central Ohio is on the rise

As per information released by the Columbus Board of Realtors, there are signs that Central Ohio is pulling out of economic recession.

According to the Board of Realtors, the average sales price of homes sold in February 2010 was up 12 % over sales in February, 2009, from US$133,604 a year ago to US$149,498 last month.

In addition, the number of actual listings were up nearly 18 %, from 2,912 in February 2009 to 3,429 in the same period in 2010.

ii) Greater Cincinnati region saw growth in 2009, despite economic slowdown

Despite the economic slowdown last year, the Greater Cincinnati region managed to add new jobs and investment, according to the Cincinnati USA Partnership’s annual report.

The report, released at the partnership’s annual luncheon said that the region recorded 247 growth projects over the past 12 months. Those projects created 8,873 new jobs and resulted in US$2.26 billion in investment.

i) Ohio becomes third in nation to offer organics recycling

The State of Ohio’s organic recycling program on March 25 initiated with an announcement from Miami Township’s new yard and organics waste recycling program making Ohio one of three states nationwide offering organic recycling.

California and New Jersey are the other two states that already have organics recycling programs.

ii) Ohio and Dayton being honored by Site Selection magazine

As per the Dayton Development Coalition, Site Selection magazine has chosen the Dayton area as the top metropolitan area for economic development efforts in the nation in the Tier 2 category in 2009.

The magazine has selected Dayton for this recognition for the second consecutive year. The category covers metro areas with populations from 200,000 to one million.

The Atlanta-based magazine has also awarded Ohio the 2009 Governor’s Cup. This is Ohio’s fourth consecutive Governor’s Cup, and its fifth in seven years.

iii) Ohio lighting manufacturer, TCP Inc. named Energy Star Partner of the Year

For the second year in a row, TCP Inc. is awarded the Energy Star Partner of the Year for Lighting Product Manufacturers by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE).

The company is recognized for its outstanding contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by manufacturing energy-efficient lighting products, including compact fluorescent (CFL) and LED lamps for residential, commercial and industrial applications. The award also acknowledges TCP's work to educate consumers about the energy-saving benefits associated with using energy-efficient lighting products.

 



Energy


i) Wilmington and Clinton County energy projects awarded US$1 million
March 23, 2010


The City of Wilmington and Clinton County are expected to receive a combined US$1 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s (ARRA) local government’s energy efficiency and conservation program.

The City of Wilmington’s two energy projects were approved for funding — solar power for the water treatment plant and electric generation from methane gas at the city landfill.

Wilmington will receive US$352,600 for the installation of a 58.3-kilowatts solar electric system at its water treatment plant.

Wilmington also will get US$309,393 for the installation of a 43-kilowatts electric generator and associated piping that can collect methane gas from the city landfill.

And Clinton County was awarded US$340,175 for the installation of a 58.3-kilowatts solar electric system at the Clinton County Jail.

ii) Patt-McDaniel and Shanahan announces ARRA state energy program opportunity
March 17, 2010


Ms. Lisa Patt-McDaniel, Director of the Ohio Department of Development, and Mr. Mark Shanahan, Energy Advisor to Ohio Governor, Mr. Ted Strickland, announced that the Department’s Ohio Energy Resources Division is accepting applications for US$8 million in funding available through the Making Efficiency Work grant program.

This opportunity is the third request for proposal involving the State Energy Program, funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The grant program is part of US$ 96 million allocated to Ohio through the ARRA Act State Energy Program.

 



Solar Energy

Ohio Department of Development announces photovoltaic and renewable energy mission
March 22, 2010


The Ohio Department of Development’s Global Markets Division will lead an export mission to Tokyo, Japan from June 25 through July 3, 2010, which is expected to assist Ohio photovoltaic and renewable energy companies with exporting their products to this market.

Mr. Ryan Miller, Global Trade Development Manager with the Department’s Global Markets Division, will lead the mission, which include participation in the PVJapan 2010 Exhibition at the Pacifico Yokohama Convention Center.

 



Wind Energy

Hardin County to receive Wind farm
March 24, 2010


Hardin County gets an economic boost with the approval of one of Ohio's first large-scale wind farms here.

The Hardin Wind Energy LLC plans to construct up to 200 wind turbines with a generation capacity of about 300 megawatts in Hardin County. The wind farm will have an integral role in making sure Ohio meets new alternative energy standards.




BioScience

BioEnterprise forms partnership with Team NEO to attract bio companies
March 3, 2010


BioEnterprise Inc., the bioscience venture developer in Northeast Ohio, has formed partnership with Team NEO to pursue new medical imaging, neurostimulation, cardiovascular device and orthopedic companies to the region.

Both nonprofits work in Northeast Ohio and so the two organizations developed a strategic plan to jointly attract companies in these four industries.

Founded in 2002 by the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, Case Western Reserve University and Summa Health System, BioEnterprise forms, develops and recruits bioscience companies.






Trade and Investment


i) Babcock & Wilcox unit forms joint venture with India’s Thermax Ltd.
March 10, 2010


Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group Inc. in Barberton, Ohio said that the company has formed a joint venture with Indian energy-environment products company Thermax Ltd. to build highly efficient boilers and pulverizers for the Indian utility boiler market.

The new company will have its headquarters in the city of Pune in Maharashtra, India. As per the agreement, Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation also will license its technology to the joint venture company for subcritical boilers 300 megawatts and larger, supercritical boilers and coal pulverizers.

The joint venture will have the full capability to engineer, manufacture and manage large power projects for the Indian power sector. Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation will own 49% of the joint venture, while Thermax will have 51% ownership.

ii) Zethus Software announces international partnership

Zethus Software, a company from the Youngstown Business Incubator is expected to announce a partnership that is expected to bring new jobs to downtown Youngstown.

Zethus Software plans to announce the partnership with Bruker-AXS Inc., a German company that manufactures and supplies various technologies for businesses and research establishments. This partnership will greatly expand the company's capabilities.

The partnership is expected to bring about 15 jobs to the area this year, with a possible 30 more to follow.





Grants

i) 4 advanced energy projects to receive additional grants

The Ohio Third Frontier program is financially aiding four local advanced energy projects. A pair of liquid crystal projects being led by Kent-based AlphaMirror Inc. and Kent Displays will each receive US$1 million, and Akron's Lockheed Martin will get US$1 million for a military airship assignment.

Also, the University of Akron is a partner in a Strongsville-based project that hopes to use a US$918,000 grant to help lower the cost of LED light manufacturing.

ii) Dayton firms to receive US$ 5.3 million from Third Frontier
March 25, 2010


Ohio aims to channel over US$5.3 million to Dayton-area companies and research groups to further sensors and advanced materials. The Ohio Third Frontier Commission approved a US$1.1 million award to Yellow Springs-based YSI Inc. to collaborate with Riehl Engineering and the University of Cincinnati on a carbon nanotube-based nutrient sensor project.

The sensor is expected to better enable monitoring of environmental waters for nitrate levels, which is a major pollutant associated with wastewaters and agricultural runoffs.

NA2010 to showcase the latest in manufacturing and distribution

2010 North American Material Handling and Logistics Show (NA 2010) at Cleveland's I-X Center to be held from April 26 - 29, 2010 is expected to bring together tens of thousands of manufacturing and distribution professionals from across the U.S. and more than 60 countries.
