27 Ohio based companies featured in this year's Fortune 500 list

Despite the financial crisis being faced by the country, twenty-seven Ohio-based firms are among the top 500 list of the nation's largest companies including three companies that are enlisted in the top 25 of this year’s Fortune 500. In fact, the number grew to 27 this year from 24 in 2008.
Columbus based Cardinal Health, Consumer products giant Procter & Gamble and Cincinnati based Kroger are the companies from Ohio that featured in the list. The rankings are based on sales.
Manufacturer from East Berlin expands business in Ohio

Adisco Inc., a 50-year-old East Berlin-based precision manufacturing company, is planning to move production operations to Ohio with the help of a six-figure grant from the state's tax credit authority.
Ohio Tax Credit Authority has awarded Adisco a tax credit of over US$ 203,000 for six years to create jobs in the Dayton area and to maintain operations at the project site for 12 years. It is expected to create 56 positions - massive growth for the company, which currently employs only eight employees.
Toledo in Ohio is declared as 'Solar Hotspot'

The northwest Ohio, especially the Toledo area, has finally been declared the prominent spotlight of being the ‘Solar Hotspot’ by the Ohio Third Frontier program.
The annual report of the Ohio Third Frontier program noted the success of its new advanced energy program and singled out the Toledo area as a "Solar Hotspot" for research, development, and commercialization of advanced solar technologies.
The report noted that, statewide, the Third Frontier was able to attract an additional US$3.5 billion this year in new resources for projects and companies.
Northwest Ohio Wind Energy LLC Formed

National Wind LLC has announced the formation of Northwest Ohio Wind Energy LLC, a community wind development company in Paulding and Van Wert counties, Ohio. Northwest Ohio Wind Energy is one of 12 families of community-based wind projects currently being developed by National Wind. The project is off to a strong start and has signed many leases with local landowners.
Wind farms to bring economic development

The rising green energy industry and wind turbines are bringing economic development and energy efficiency to different Ohio counties like Crawford, Richland and Morrow.
The three counties are on one of two major transmissions systems in the eastern portion of the county. Wind turbines would be strategically connected to transmission systems to generate cheaper electric energy.
The turbines are located away from public roads, property lines, and existing buildings and are expected to bring prosperity to the regions.
FirstEnergy announce plans to repower R.E. Burger Plant with Biomass

FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) announced its plans to repower units 4 and 5 at its R.E. Burger Plant in Shadyside, Ohio, to generate electricity principally with biomass. The project is expected to result in one of the largest Biomass facilities in the country.
The capital cost of the project is estimated to be approximately US$200 million. Once the project is completed, units 4 and 5 of the Burger Plant could be capable of producing up to 312 megawatts (MW) of electricity - its current capacity.
Portage Township in Ohio gets wind firm

Portage Township of Ottawa County in Ohio is receiving a wind turbine manufacturing company established by two local businessmen. The establishment of this company is expected to save 100 Ohio jobs and could even create new jobs besides helping customers through the entire windmill process. The company, which is going to be an all-Ohio wind turbine, is putting a lot of people to work and thereby giving stability to many companies.
Ohio Governor forms Minority Business Council

Ohio Governor, Mr. Ted Strickland has signed an executive order in the presence of Interim Director of the Ohio Department of Development, Mr. Mark Barbash and members of the minority business community to establish the Ohio Minority Business Advisory Council.
The executive order will maintain the state's commitment to minority business success in Ohio and will coordinate the state's efforts to maximize the opportunities and growth of minority businesses.
NW Ohio to receive US$3 million to publicize environmental, energy careers

Northwest Ohio will get over US$3 million to invest to lure students to study renewable energy and sustainable environment technologies.
The area's public universities and community colleges are working together on a state-supported program to recruit, train, and graduate scientists to enter this growing career field.
A US$1.56 million grant through the Choose Ohio First Scholarship will be shared by the University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Owens Community College, Terra Community College, and Northwest State Community College.
Ohio’s initiatives aids businesses

Along with the federal stimulus plan, the state of Ohio is also initiating different programs aimed at helping businesses survive the economic crunch.
Business firms in Ohio must take advantage of these grants, incentives and other tax breaks that are available through the state including job creation and retention credits, property and sales tax credits, and a variety of programs through the Ohio Energy office, including the Manufacturing Energy Efficiency Program that not only offers a free energy audit, but will match business expenses to make the place more efficient.
All these contributions have offered Ohio the coveted Governor's Cup for three straight years. At the same time, Ohio has received the second rank in the nation in research and development.
