PM asks Ministry of Renewable Energy to draft guidelines

Against the backdrop of rising crude oil prices, Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh asked the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to prepare guidelines and schemes for the introduction of Renewable Energy certificates to encourage states to promote and trade in renewable energy. At a meeting of the Energy Coordination Committee chaired by him, Mr. Singh recognized the importance of developing renewable energy in India.

The meeting also decided that in rural areas, grid connectivity should be explored for solar energy and villages should have access to both conventional and non-conventional sources of energy.

Government may set green power quota for power distribution companies

New Delhi: Government made it mandatory for power distributors to buy a minimum quantum of green power for their consumers. The government is also panning to set a regulation through which power distributors must have a mix of conventional and non-conventional power in their kitty.

Currently only 14 states have set quotas for sourcing renewable energy for their grids. According to Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) Chairman & Managing Director, Mr. Debashish Majumdar, “The Centre and state regulatory commissions are both working to bring in the regulations. With the revised regulations in place, power distribution companies may have to pay a heavy fine for not sourcing any renewable energy to the grid.”

US firm about to set up renewable energy projects

US-based Astonfield Management’s subsidiary, Astonfield Renewable Resources, is setting up countrywide 500 MW renewable energy projects. The company, which plans to invest $1 billion over the next three years, is focusing on essential areas like solar, biomass and biogas.

The West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) has approved Astonfield’s three projects comprising a 10 mw biomass-based power plant, a 5-mw solar photo voltaic plant and a 1-mw manure to power plant. The company is also talking with other state government officials in Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana to set up renewable energy based power plants.

West Bengal plans to prepare policy on renewable energy

West Bengal government is formulating a policy on renewable energy in the state to encourage its use among real estate developers, civic administration and common people and it is expected to complete in 2008. West Bengal is taking help from the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM), Kolkata to prepare these policies. West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation Limited (WBGEDCL) is also assisting in policy preparation. Infact, WBGEDCL is also assisting other states like Mizoram and union territory Andaman and Nicobar Islands in preparing similar policies.


 

Sharp targets to achieve 20% revenue from India

World leader in solar power technology, Sharp, has launched its solar powered lighting systems in the country and aims to make 20% of India’s market share by 2010. Sharp entered the Indian market last year and it is aiming to install 1 MW solar plant in 2008 and 8-MW solar plant later by 2010.

Tata BP Solar plans to invest US$ 100 million to produce solar power

Tata BP Solar, a JV company between Tata Power and BP Solar, has announced its plans of investing US$ 100 million in FY08 for manufacturing solar cells and modules. The company provides services to defense forces; states in the North East, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar; educational institutions like IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIM Bangalore; and has also electrified 20 villages in Orissa. Tata BP Solar has recently signed a MoU with Tata Agrico to distribute solar products in the rural areas.

West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation (WBGEDC) has launched a technology called solar rooftop photovoltaic technology through which people can generate solar energy on their rooftops to fulfill their need of energy consumption at home and excess can be sent to the state grid. WBGEDC, MD and Special Secretary-Power, Government of west Bengal, Mr. S.P. Gon Chaudhuri said that a house can generate solar power up to 90% of its own utility and 10% can be sent to the grid. The corporation has already allotted 25 such house and has also inked a deal with DLF to build 800 such houses in Kolkata. The cost is estimated at about US$ 107,142 per house. As a part of the deal, DLF is planning to invest US$ 162.7 million and WBGEDC will implement the technology.

TN plans to set up 10 MW solar plant

Tamil Nadu government is inviting investors from private sector to set up more windmills and solar plants in the state. Presently, TN government plans to set up a 10Mw solar power plant in association with the private sector. Even though the cost of setting-up solar power plant is higher than other wind, thermal and hydro plants, the state government is hoping that the recently announced incentives by the Centre will assist it in attracting investment for the solar plant.

Belgium based Hansen technologies has signed a US$ 348.8 million agreement with the Tamil Nadu Government to establish a plant in Coimbatore to manufacture gear boxes for wind turbines.

Lanco confirms its wind energy foray

The US$ 775.8 million diversified Lanco Group has decided to set-up a wind turbine manufacturing unit in Puducherry with an investment of about US$ 116.2 million. It is also planning to set up a wind farms in India, the US and Europe.

AES to set up turbine manufacturing unit in India

US Power giant is looking to set up the wind energy turbine manufacturing unit to boost the production of power equipment in India. The company’s global strategy of foraying into equipment manufacturing is still being worked out and a decision to locate the new plant in India may be taken only after studying other markets and undertaking a cost benefit analysis.

SRF Ltd ready to begin its wind power project in TN

SRF Ltd, the leading tyre cord maker, announced that all nine units of its 14 MW wind power project in Tamil Nadu have begun operations. The US$ 20.9 million project would cater half of the power requirement of its production unit in the state.
